Nigeria has 774 Local Government Areas each local government area is administered by a local government council consisting of a chairman who is the chief executive of the LGA, and other elected members who are referred to as councilors. Each of the areas is further subdivided into wards with minimum of ten and maximum of fifteen for each area.

The Function of Local Government area:

  1. Economic recommendations to the state;
  2. Collection of taxes and fees.
  3. Licensing of bicycles, trucks, canoe wheel barrows and carts.
  4. Establishment, maintenance and regulation of markets, motor parks and public convenience
  5. Construction and maintenance of roads streets, drains and other public hightway parks and open spaces.
  6. Street naming and house numbering.
  7. Provision and maintenance of public transportation and refuse deposal
  8. Registration of deaths and marriages
  9. Inspection of premises and tenements for the purpose of levying.
  10. Control and regulation of all descriptions, shops and kiosks, restaurants and other places for sales of food to the public.
  11. Identification of oath.
